Please read this! Good explanation of the difference.STRAY, SEMI-FERAL, OR FERAL?![]()
Have you spied a cat in your yard? Seen a colony of cats by your office building? ![]()
What’s the difference between a stray cat, a semi-feral cat, & a feral cat? ![]()
Below is some general information. As always, there can be some gray area.![]()
Stray cats were at one point socialized to people and may be eligible for adoption, while truly feral cats aren’t domesticated and are happy living outside on their own.![]()
Feral cats are also less likely to approach people, unlike strays, who are more comfortable around humans and houses.![]()
Semi-feral cats are cats who have had some experience with humans in the past. Semi-feral cats are vocal and may make eye-contact even if they do not allow humans to touch them. Some semi-feral cats can be socialized over time; it depends on the cat and the person working with that cat.![]()
PLEASE DO NOT LABEL EVERY CAT YOU SEE OUTSIDE AS FERAL. How you label an outdoor cat will determine next steps on the best way to help that cat.![]()
All outdoor cats should go through the Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) process - a stray cat might go into foster care after vetting in search of an indoor forever home if a rescue organization has space. Generally, stray cats are candidates for adoption; feral cats are generally not.![]()
